On our trip to New Mexico and Arizona in October, we met a remarkable
couple from Germany. Helmut and Katharina were bicycling
the entire length of Route 66,
starting in Chicago. We invited them to visit us when they reached
Pasadena, just one day from the end of the highway in Santa Monica. They
arrived on Carl's birthday and joined the celebration. (The bash, by the
way, featured a fantastic potluck Italian dinner for 15—we have some
great cooks as friends—followed by a late-night trip to the mountains,
where we watched the Leonid
meteor showers until about 3:30.) These pictures were taken on the
morning of the last day of Helmut's and Katherine's 8-week journey.
